If I were in your shoes, I'd install MSN's McAfee and see if it sits well with my system. My only problems were due more to Windows service packs than anything else. Symantec (Corporate, at least) has always been stable. I haven't tried McAfee since then, so things might be better now. Not only was it tacky and non-intuitive, it caused problems with our Win98 installs. I liked McAfee VirusScan early on ('95), but hated the UI with McAfee Office. Now, comparing Symantec with McAfee based on other factors. I chose it because it installs and runs well on my system and was free. I have Symantec AV Corporate to manually scan the files I download.

all of which minimizes the value the AV capabilities. In the case where I did discover a new variant, McAfee and Symantec both failed to detect it anyway (TrendMicro succeeded).Īnd if you're one of those who keep your viruses updated, chances are, you also keep Windows updated, have a firewall and are cautious about the attachments you open. It's the user who fails to schedule updates. In my experience, people aren't infected by new viruses they are infected by viruses where definitions have long been published by the AV manufacturer. I don't find much value in comparing their AV capabilities. When comparing AV programs, all I look for is application stability and ease of use. If you have a 2003 version of Norton that is really pretty old and you might want to consider getting a new version not just the defintions subscriptions.

I have zonealarm pro firewall but it is an older version and I have considered trying the McAfee free one. So over all I am please with it thus far. I was very impressed with the results of the scan and how fast it ran. But Norton had never ever even mentioned them. They were all files associated with HP and the backweb feature of HP which I knew of. I ran a scan on my pc and it found sevearal files it called something like programs you don't want. I found the whole install process totally painless and easy. It sets itself up to do a weekly scan on Friday at 8pm which was fine but you can change that. I then ran the updates and got all the latest definitions and updates. I already had the McAfee center on my pc because I have their antispyware. There are many parts to Norton antivirus so make sure all are gone! And made sure to delete all the scheduled tasks also. I followed the directions on the Norton website.

I competely deleted all traces of Norton from my pc. I chose to go with the new free McAfee antivirus. I wanted a new version not just definitions. I was not happy with that any longer since it was a 2002 version and so many changes have been made since then. I had been using the Norton that came on my pc and just buying the yearly subscriptions. I guess I could always delete it if I hated it ? Huh?

Norton's has always treated me well -I have the 2003 version and would not upgrade -if I do decide to renew my subscription. EVERYONE has a different opionion I guess. They seem to love AVG, and recommend Avast alot. I know on the Security forum, they think Little of Norton's and McAffee anti virus. This question is for my NEWER computer though, a windows XP pro -that the Nortons' will be expiring. BUt those guys told me it was Nasty Malware, not a Virus really. I am wondering why AVAST did not catch this Troj ? SO I do quesiton some of the FREE firewalls.

I had free AVAST on that computer, didn't have some critical windows updates, also did not have a Software Firewall, just the Router Firewall set to Medium & Ad-awre SE.
